Dry skin can lead to flakiness, causing cracks on sensitive areas of the body like lips, hands, feet, and even the face. The dryness in the atmosphere removes moisture from the skin, making it look patchy and flaky.

One tip that you should always follow in winter months is to carry a hydrating moisturiser in your bag, and apply it on problem areas of the skin. What works even better is to use natural, home remedies that will have lasting effects on your skin. Since winter months suck away all the moisture from your skin, it is important that you apply natural barriers that will keep the moisture intact and help in keeping your skin supple.

While there are countless synthetic moisturisers and creams that claim to restore the glow and moisture to your skin, the best way to treat dry skin is by using organic and natural products that are free from chemicals.

What exactly causes dry skin in winter

Dry skin in winter months is attributed to many external factors. You must know that the skin contains enough moisture to keep the skin free from scaling and wrinkling. But as winter sets in, the dry air sucks away all the moisture from your body, leaving your skin very dry. Also, with the onset of winter, we all start using warm/hot water, while taking a shower or washing our hands and face.

Home remedies for dry skin during winter months

Here are some very effective and easy home remedies to combat dryness of the skin during these harsh winter months. It is best to start using these remedies right now, and not to wait till a problem actually occurs, so that your skin is protected well in advance.
  1. Avocado and papaya – Papaya is a proven natural remedy for treating dry skin. Avocado is also a great natural remedy to hydrate and nourish dry skin. Make a paste with a slice of banana, a slice of papaya, and 1 whole avocado. Apply the mixture all over the face. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes, and then wash it off with lukewarm water. You can apply this mixture 2 times a week.
  2. Cucumber pack – Cucumber is packed with nutrients that moisturise the skin and keep it supple and glowing. It also helps in getting rid of summer tanning. Take a fresh whole cucumber. Remove the flesh from it and make it into a thin paste. Apply the mixture evenly on your face, and leave it on for 30 minutes. Apply this at least twice in a week, and get visible results after a week.

3. Honey and rose waterHoney is known to lock the moisture in the skin and prevent it from drying, as it is a humectant. It also enhances skin glow and improves skin texture. Rose water has natural cleansing and toning properties. Mix both the ingredients well and apply this on your face and neck. You will notice immediate results.

4. Olive oil and egg yolk – Olive oil and egg yolk is a very good combination for helping you get back that moisture and to fight the dryness of skin. Vitamins E and K in olive oil give protection and add moisture to the skin. You can also use coconut oil or almond oil. Another way to moisturise your entire skin is by applying some oil on your body before you step into the shower. The thin film of oil will act as a protective barrier from the hot water.

5. Milk cream – Milk cream acts as a natural moisturiser. Add a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon and 4 tablespoons of milk to it. Mix the contents well and apply it evenly on your arms, legs, and face. Leave it on for 30 minutes, and then wash it off with warm water.

6. Honey and curd – Honey and curd have been used for ages as a natural cure for dry, flaky skin. The mixture helps to soothe the skin and keep it glowing. Curd has anti-inflammatory properties, and is packed with antioxidants that keep the skin free from wrinkles and blemishes. Apply the mixture on your skin, and leave it on for 20 minutes. Wash off with warm water and pat dry.

7. Aloe vera – Take an aloe vera stem and squeeze out the gel from the soft cushion of the stem. Aloe vera has excellent skin-hydrating qualities. It imparts a natural glow to the skin and also helps heal any rashes and flaking of the skin. The best time to apply it is after stepping out of the shower. It restores the moisture back into the skin, and keeps it moist and radiant looking.

8. Castor oil – You may not know that castor oil is magical for your body. The ricinoleic acid in the oil guards your skin from harmful chemicals in your cosmetics. It has good astringent properties that remove dead skin and impurities. Apply it over the dry areas of your skin at bedtime using a cotton swab. Rinse with warm water for best results.

9. Coconut oilCoconut oil is a great way to ensure that your skin stays healthy and hydrated during the winter months. If you notice any cracks and dryness on your face or other areas of the skin, take a few drops of coconut oil and apply it over your skin. You can do this everyday at bedtime, and help your skin rejuvenate during the winter months.

10. Orange peel – Orange is a great source of vitamin C and other nutrients that promote skin health. Instead of discarding orange peels, you could make them into a very nourishing skin pack for winter months. It helps exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells. To make an orange peel off mask, take peels from a fresh orange. Dry them and crush them. Add 1 egg white and 1 spoon of raw milk. Mix all of them well and apply all over your face. Peel off the mask gently, and you will notice an instant glow.

11. Banana and yoghurt – Banana and yoghurt are both excellent for keeping the skin healthy and moist during winter months. Take a ripe banana and mash it well. Now add 2 spoons of yoghurt to the mashed banana. You could also add a spoonful of honey. Mix all the ingredients well, and apply them evenly over your face and hands. Keep this mask for 20 minutes, and wash it off with warm water.

12. Oatmeal and olive oil Crush oatmeal to get a grainy consistency, to make it a natural exfoliant.  Take 1 spoon of crushed oatmeal and to this, add 1 spoon of olive oil. Mix the ingredients well and apply it over your face. Keep this mixture for about 10 minutes, and wash with warm water. Before washing, make sure that you gently rub the mixture on your face in clockwise and anticlockwise motions, to get rid of dead and dry skin cells.
