World Homeopathy Day: An Expert Tells You Everything About Homeopathy

“Is homeopathy really a science?” “Does it work effectively?” “Did you study like ‘other’ doctors?”

If I could have a dollar for every time someone asked me these questions, I think I would have been laughing all the way to the bank by now! Yes, to answer these inane questions. Similar to all other branches of science, homeopathy is also based on logical principles, scientific facts, and research. It is a completely rational system of medicine with a holistic, individualistic approach to life, health, disease, remedy, and cure.

Let me explain this in the next few lines.

For me, homeopathy has been a natural way of life. Growing up in a family of homeopaths (my grandfather was a homeopathic physician and my father is a practising homeopathic physician) I understood the principles and power of homeopathy at a very young age. I have never taken any allopathic medicine when I had a fever, ear infections, measles, or chickenpox.

Not to take away the importance of modern medicine, but I’m here to tell you why homeopathy should be considered in some serious ailments or in cases where the general immunity of a person has been compromised.

Let’s start by clearing the air about whether homeopathy ever provides ‘quick relief’ and if it always takes longer to heal.

The process of healing is not slow; homeopathy just doesn’t believe in merely suppressing the symptoms. It tries to eliminate the problem from its root so that the cure is more permanent and doesn’t recur time and again. Suppression doesn’t mean cure. For example, if a person is suffering from haemorrhoids and if it is suppressed by removing it with an operation it could result in heart affections or abdominal colic.

What is Homeopathy?

If you see a sudden overnight disappearance of eczema that you have had for years after an external application this would be mere suppression and more often the problem could have gotten pushed to a deeper, more important, organ. This issue is bound to come up in due course of time which means the relief was temporary.

Also, there needs to be an inward improvement in the body (a general internal feeling of well-being) when an outward (external) symptom has been caused to disappear. Hence, a ‘quick relief’ is a very relative term, and it depends on the nature of the disease. For example, in many situations, such as toothaches, mechanical injuries, and burns the relief is speedy.

Individualistic understanding of the case

In homeopathy, we develop a special understanding of the root cause of a disease. This is done by meticulous case taking which in itself is an art. This often requires over 2 hours of detailed questioning—the patient is asked about his/her food habits, dreams, relationships with friends and family, temperament, and many more details to gather the perfect outwardly reflected picture of the internal essence of the disease. The symptoms that homeopaths gather are not just an assortment of symptoms thrown together without rhyme or reason but what can be logically combined into a harmonious and consistent whole, having form, coherency, and individuality, thereby helping us reach the desired remedy. Also, the homeopathic approach is holistic which enables us to get to the probable cause and eliminate a certain problem permanently over a period of time.

What is Homeopathy?

What is a holistic approach?

Homeopathy accepts the concept of the biological whole. Not a particular organ—not the liver, not the kidney, or the brain which is diseased—but the man as a whole is diseased because none of the organs have a separate existence from the body. We treat the patient as a whole, as an individual with his/her own peculiar emotional, mental, and physical make-up.

In order to strike a perfect balance between the mind and body it is important for the above three planes to be in perfect sync with each other, and the constitutional homeopathic remedy given after the case taking helps us to achieve just that.

There are a lot of people that find the whole process of case taking very therapeutic. It takes you back to your childhood or makes you think of how you feel about various situations that life throws at you and maybe even lets you tap into parts of your mental being that you keep hidden daily.

The symptoms explained by patient give homeopaths an indication for the correct remedy, irrespective of the diagnosis of the disease condition. Thus, we are able to treat cases even before the diagnosis or even if the disease is obscure.

What is Homeopathy?

Most importantly, homeopathic remedies, though powerful in action, are non-toxic and devoid of toxic side-effects and after-effects as those produced by some other drug systems. This makes it safe for infants and expecting mothers too.

Homeopathy, in effect, explores all-natural solutions for various illnesses that plague us, ranging from mental health concerns like attention deficit disorder and dementia to physiological concerns such as irritable bowel syndrome and sinusitis, to name a few.

It also helps to restore the spirit when one is torn at the emotional level—whether you have symptoms you don’t understand or symptoms you don’t know how to articulate or you have lost a loved one and just need to heal. Homeopathy can give you the answers and heal.

The body is our temple. It is the only thing that truly remains ours till the end of our time. It is where we live. Hence, it is important to let it thrive in its natural state and keep it free from toxins and unnatural substances.
