All About Triphala - An Ancient Ayurvedic Supplement

Yet another one of ayurveda’s wonders – triphala (meaning 3 fruits), a mixture of 3 of nature’s produce that work together to give you one thing – good health.

With the world returning to its roots, ayurveda is getting more popular than ever. However, many people are sceptical about alternate therapies and their efficacy. If you belong to the latter category, and yet have tried other methods to lose weight and haven’t succeeded, jump onto the ayurveda bandwagon with triphala.

What is triphala?

Quite simply put, triphala is an ayurvedic concoction that is comprised of a mix of 3 (tri) dried fruits (phala) – amla (Indian gooseberry), bibhitaki, and a dried fruit called haritaki. When the 3 are mixed, you get triphala, which is a health supplement that is said to have many benefits. Key among these is its ability to help you shed kilos, by eliminating body toxins.

How does it work?

While the effects of triphala have been studied in some detail, most of the work done focuses on its role as a toxic flusher. It works directly on your poor digestion, sorting out a host of linked problems in the process. When triphala enters your body, it works as a laxative of sorts – removing accumulated waste, eradicating toxins, and reducing bloating. Once your system is on the road to repair, it becomes easier for it to process the nutrients entering it on a regular basis, help maintain equilibrium, and cut fat over a period of time. Since it directly works on your metabolism, it works on eliminating fatty deposits and is widely seen as a tool to reduce weight. Do remember though, just consuming triphala will not cut it; you need to combine its use with proper diet and exercise, which are the thumb rules for healthy living.

How to consume it

Triphala is an acquired taste, and the powder, which can be dissolved in milk or water and had every morning, can be quite unpalatable. If you can get past the bitterness, it works best in this raw form. If not, almost all ayurvedic companies market triphala capsules which can be consumed daily, though the desired results are said to take far longer if using capsules, as opposed to triphala in its pure form.

Side effects

Triphala is touted as a good weight-loss tool, given its cleansing and laxative properties, but it is not recommended for those who are pregnant or lactating. Also, excessive usage can cause flatulence, diarrhoea, and dehydration, so try and stick to prescribed levels of triphala for best effect, and vary the dosage according to your needs over a period of time.
