Acne is a skin condition that causes spots and pimples. Pimples form when hair follicles under your skin clog up. Most pimples form on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne makes your skin look uneven, irregular and discolored. Anyone can get acne, but it is common in teenagers and young adults. Studies reveal that acne affects 3 in every 4 people aged 11 to 30 years. Although acne isn’t a serious skin problem, it tends to leave scars. On face as well as on self-confidence of young adults, especially teenagers. The good news however is, it can be cured. But before we get to ways to treat acne and acne scars, let us first understand what causes them. Hormonal imbalance, emotional stress, greasy cosmetics, menstruation are a few factors that are believed to trigger acne but according to Dr. Chiranjiv Chhabra,  one of the leading dermatologists in India, the main cause of acne is lack of hygiene. She believes half of the acne issues can solved by taking proper care of our facial hygiene. She recommends washing face with a soap meant for oily or combination skin, at least four to five times a day. She goes on to emphasize the importance of facial hygiene by saying that one must go to bed only after removing makeup and ensuring that their face is clean. Then she goes on to explain how nutrition affects our skin’s quality and how a well balanced diet, rich in antioxidants can improve it. She, however feels these measures aren’t adequate if you want to get rid of acne scars completely. For that, she recommends visiting a dermatologist. According to her, one can save oneself from getting a major skin surgery done if they get an acne treatment done in its initial stage.
