With an immense amount of pollution and negative energy surrounding us, it is easy to fall prey to negativity and start feeling low, exhausted, and drained out. Essential oils can help counter this, by re-energising and relaxing you.

Let’s explore the aromatic world of essential oils, which help relax the body, the mind, and the soul.

What are essential oils

Essential oils are known to be natural healers for one’s mental, physical, and emotional health. Ideally, these oils lack fatty acids and hence, they are not oils, but highly concentrated plant components. They are extracted through steam distillation of different parts of herbs and plants such as roots, bark, flowers, or leaves. These oils can be used in multiple ways, such as for massages, for baths, through a diffuser, or in a room spray. They can also be inhaled by putting a few drops on a tissue paper or handkerchief, and can even be directly applied on the skin, with caution.

The best essentials oils for relaxation:

  1. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) – Lavender essential oil is said to be amongst the most researched essential oils, especially for its relaxing effects. Try adding a few drops to your evening bath, to experience its amazing effect on nerves and sleep quality.

2. Rose (Rosa damascena) – Rose essential oil is known for relieving anxiety and depression, and also for helping with panic attacks and grief. The relaxing aroma of rose is curiously settling for the heart.

3. Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) – Derived from a hybrid of bitter orange and lime, Citrus bergamot relaxes the mind and the body. It is one of the rare food-flavouring essential oils, which also contains antibacterial properties. Apart from its relaxing properties, it is also good for heart rate, blood pressure, and chronic pain.

4. Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) – Originated from Southeast Asia, it is extracted from the flower of a tropical tree. Other than the relaxing aroma, it calms the nervous system, resulting in reduced heart rate and blood pressure.

5. Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) – It can be best described as a nervous system tonic that calms the mind with its energy. It alleviates jitteriness and hypersensitivity. It even finds use in trauma treatments, adding to calmness, self-awareness, and stabilisation.

Impressed? But there is more that these essential oils can do for us. They are also known for their therapeutic healing properties for pain, indigestion, cold, flu, ageing, hormonal disturbances, and a lot more.
