Why the ayurvedic way? Because ayurveda is a consciousness based on approach to health, a spiritual medicine recognising the phenomenal intelligence in every grain, every seed of all life and every living thing.
I’ve always said, “When it comes to wellness, don’t follow a rulebook – follow your instincts.”
Eat when you’re hungry, rest when you’re tired, and listen to your body when you’re uncertain about something. Personally, I like the ayurvedic way of living because it aims to achieve holistic well-being of the mind, body, and soul. Again, I’d say that there is no need to follow just about all guidelines blindly, because forcing any practice on yourself would only make you resent it more in the long run. Depending on your body’s need and your lifestyle, you must choose the best, most practical solutions that add value to your life. Take the first step and listen to your how your body responds to different stimuli like food, sleep, weather, exercise et cetera, and everything else will follow.
If you are absolutely unacquainted with this way of living, I’d love to help you get started. Remember, it’s not about giant leaps; it’s about small, consistent lifestyle changes. Let’s begin by tweaking your diet a teeny-tiny bit. Ayurvedic beliefs state that food is the best treatment for what ails you. Make these ayurvedic superfoods a part of your diet, and every meal will nourish and heal you:
1. Lemons – The fact that lemons promote both healthy digestion and excretion makes them a strong nourishing and purifying agent for the body. My advice: Have unsweetened lemonade or lemon tea a few times a day. Your body will be thanking you in just a few days

2. Ghee (clarified butter) – Ghee is considered to be a fantastic rejuvenating and longevity-promoting food. It aids digestion, calms the nerves, and has an excellent absorption rate in the body – acting as a great medium for transporting nutrients to all the tissues. My advice: A little ghee everyday won’t kill you. Go on, eat up.

3. Ginger – Some people call it the ‘universal medicine’. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and stimulates the appetite, while also helping with digestive troubles like bloating and flatulence. While fresh ginger helps in relieving nausea and vomiting, dried ginger root alleviates joint pain and migraines, when mixed and used with oil. My advice: Stop avoiding ginger like it’s the plague. Use more fresh ginger in your food and some in your tea. It’s delicious!

4. Fennel seeds – This sweet spice has a cooling effect on the body, and is a messiah for all digestive troubles. It makes for a perfect remedy for bloating, flatulence, constipation, diarrhoea, menstrual cramps, and nausea. It helps reduce cholesterol, and is also believed to boost memory. My advice: Chew on a teaspoon of these seeds after each meal.
5. Water – I know water doesn’t technically fit into the ‘food’ category, but there can never be a list in ayurveda without it! Also referred to as the ‘universal solvent’, water assists all virtual healing in some way or the other. When had hot, it promotes digestion, improves blood circulation, relieves constipation, and helps maintain healthy hair and skin. When had cold, it combats heat stroke, aids in weight loss, and makes an excellent post-workout drink. My advice: Drink!
