There’s a reason why multani mitti is our favourite face pack, no matter what.

Nature is an endless resource for all things health and beauty related.  One such resource is the highly underutilised fuller’s earth, or multani mitti. The active elements of multani mitti work to absorb oil, dirt, and sweat from the skin, effectively working to give the skin an unparalleled, lustrous glow.

Multani mitti is essentially a form of clay. It is rich in magnesium chloride, and has cooling and soothing properties. Here are a few benefits:

1. Helpful in preventing acne and pimples, as well as in reducing existing ones.

2. Removes excess oil, dirt, sweat, impurities and sebum from the skin, making it healthy and clean.

3. Its cooling properties help in treating sunburn, insect bites, rashes, skin inflammation and other infections and allergies.

4. Helps treat dark circles.

5. Improves blood circulation.

6. Prevents and treats tanning. It can also help brighten complexion.

7. Helps treat pigmentation and helps to even skin tone.

8. Helps in gradually removing marks on the skin, such as pimples or acne scars; freckles; blackheads and whiteheads; and others scars and blemishes.

9. Has antiseptic properties.

10. Helps tighten skin and prevent wrinkles.

Benefits Of Multani Mitti

Multani mitti can be used in various ways. Since its core property is that it is highly absorbent, it is usually used as a face pack for oily skin, to treat and prevent acne and pimples. However, it can also safely be used for normal and dry skin. Keep in mind that extremely dry skin may not benefit from it.

Here are a few ways this wonderful clay can be used:

For Oily Skin:

Mix multani mitti with water, or rose water into a semi-thick consistency. Apply on the face, let it dry and wash off with warm water.

For Normal/Dry Skin: Instead of water, add a little oil (vitamin E oil, olive oil or almond oil) to fuller’s earth and apply on face. Let it dry and wash off with warm water.

As a Scrub:

Add crushed almonds and glycerine to multani mitti and exfoliate the face with it. This will remove the dead cells, along with blackheads and whiteheads, and leave your skin feeling rejuvenated.

For Shiny Hair: For soft and shiny hair, you can soak multani mitti in water for two hours and then use as a shampoo. You can also mix it with egg, beer, lemon juice and amla. Apply on your hair as a pack and leave it for 15-20 minutes. Rinse, and shampoo.

As A Body Wash: For supple skin, make a mix of multani mitti, oatmeal, neem powder, turmeric powder, sandalwood powder, honey, and milk/yoghurt. This mix can be stored for a few days.

Remember that multani mitti packs should not be applied more than 2-3 times a week, depending on how oily your skin is. You should also avoid using it on the chest as its cooling properties can cause respiratory problems. Always store it away from direct sunlight.
