Home Remedies To Reduce Dark Circles

Everyone wants to party all night, and not wake up with dark circles. Here’s how to tackle the issue, using the remedies hidden in your kitchen.

However much we love zombie movies, no one likes zombie eyes, a.k.a. dark circles. Although dark circles are usually harmless, they do mar the look of an otherwise perfect face. Apart from proper rest, hydration, exercise, reduction in stress levels, and a balanced diet with adequate iron, and vitamins A, C, E, and K, there are a few home remedies as well that can help you get rid of, or at least reduce the appearance of, dark circles. 


Potato juice – Potato juice is known to combat dark circles and puffy eyes, thanks to its bleaching properties. Grate half a potato and extract the juice. Soak a cotton ball with it, and place it over your closed eyes. Keep it on for about 10 minutes, and then wash with cold water. Repeat daily. You can also place raw potato slices over your eyes.


Cucumber – Place chilled cucumber slices over your eyes for 10 minutes, daily, to see the desired effect. You can also mix cucumber juice with lemon juice, and apply on and around your closed eyes.

Tomato – Mix 1 teaspoon of tomato juice with half a teaspoon of lemon juice, and apply on the affected area. The bleaching properties of both tomato and lemon, along with the lycopene present in tomatoes, will help in combating dark circles. Drinking tomato juice also helps. 


Almonds – Massaging sweet almond oil into your dark circles before bed daily, and leaving it on overnight, will help, as almonds contain vitamin E. You can also make a paste with crushed almonds and milk, and apply to the affected area for about 10 minutes, before washing it off.

Rose water – Place a cotton ball soaked with rose water onto your closed eyelids, and let stay for 15 minutes. Wash off with cold water.

Tea bags – Put used, chilled tea bags (green, chamomile, or black) over your closed eyes for 10-15 minutes. The antioxidants, notably tannins, and the caffeine in tea help in reducing puffiness and fluid retention, and in shrinking blood vessels.

Coconut oil – Massage coconut oil gently under your eyes. You’ll get the best results if the oil is extra-virgin and raw. You can also mix it with almond oil.

Cold compress – A cold compress works to shrink your blood vessels, and hence, reduce the appearance of your dark circles. It can be a cloth soaked in cold water or milk, an ice pack, the back of a chilled spoon, or a bag of frozen peas. Place it on your closed eyelids for a few minutes, and repeat daily. The lactic acid in milk makes it a great option. 


Lemon juice – The bleaching properties of lemon, along with the vitamin C it contains, helps to combat the appearance of dark circles. Dip a cotton ball in lemon juice and place it on your closed eyelids for 10 minutes, then wash off with cold water.

Orange juice – Mix fresh orange juice with glycerin, and apply to the affected area. This works because of the vitamin C content of oranges.


Mint leaves – Make a paste by blending crushed mint leaves with water or lemon juice, and apply to the affected area. Apply on to your dark circles, and leave it for about 10 minutes. Wash off with cold water. Be sure to do a patch test before using this remedy.


Turmeric – The latest darling of the food circles, turmeric’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can also help diminish dark circles. Mix turmeric with water or pineapple juice to make a paste, and apply to the affected area to see results. You can also make a pack with gram flour (besan), turmeric, lemon juice, and tomato purée. Apply to your dark circles, and leave it on for 10-15 minutes, before washing it off.

Avocado – Place 2 slices of avocado on your closed eyelids, and leave it on for 15 minutes. The fatty acids, and vitamins B12, E, and K present in avocado work wonders for the skin. You can also mash it and add almond oil to make a paste, which can then be applied to the dark circles. 


Nutmeg – Make a paste of crushed nutmeg and milk, and apply to the affected area. Leave on overnight, and then wash off with cold water. The vitamins C and E in nutmeg, along with the lactic acid in milk will help reduce the appearance of dark circles. Apple slices over the eyes, and a massage with castor oil can also help greatly with the problem of dark circles. Although, if a healthy lifestyle is not followed, there is little that any remedy will be able to do.
