Hot, wet, and sticky…monsoons can be bothersome. How does one remain cool and composed in the face of such humidity?
The first showers of monsoon are welcome, as they dispel the heat and bring the temperature down to tolerable levels, but as the days progress, so does the humidity and the discomfort. What can we do to overcome this?
1. Sticky skin – With too much moisture in the air, the skin, especially that of the face, becomes sticky – one feels like an oil factory. If you have an outdoor life, then you will get some dust and grime added to the oil, and the sad tale of pimples and blackheads will begin…the secret is to wash, tone, and moisturise your face often.

2. Cucumber and honey for your face – Oily skin needs proper treatment, and cucumbers happen to be good for it. Cut thick chunks of cucumber, dab them in honey, and rub them on your face at night; wash it off in the morning. If you don’t want to keep it overnight, wash off after an hour. Your skin will feel cool and refreshed.

3. Excessive sweating and body odour – With humidity comes sweat, and brings body odour with it. It is the bacteria in the sweat that produces the odour. Keep yourself clean, and take baths twice a day, if possible. Make sure that the underarms, groin area, feet etc. remain dry. Use powder, roll-ons, antifungal sprays or gels. Change your clothes daily, and avoid reusing unwashed garments.

4. Sticky locks – Monsoons come with a plethora of hair problems – stickiness, frizz, hair fall, breakage, and, oh, dandruff too. It is important to wash your locks at least thrice a week with a mild shampoo. Massage your hair with coconut oil an hour or so before you shampoo. A hot oil treatment would be good too. Coconut oil helps controls frizz. If you have dandruff, rub lemon juice on your hair before you wash it.

5. Moisturise – It’s not that monsoon and humidity mean bye-bye to moisturisers. In fact, experiencing stickiness means you should switch to the right kind of moisturiser – an oil-control one. If you take a shower twice a day during monsoons, then apply moisturiser twice as well. This will ensure a good and fresh feel during this season.

6. Eat fresh foods – It is important to eat the right kinds of foods for the body to function well, and to be able to handle the heat and humidity of the rainy season. Stick to fresh and raw fruits and vegetables, if you can. Food cooked in too much oil may stimulate the sebaceous glands to over work, leaving you with skin problems.
