Dr APJ Abdul Kalam will always be remembered as a beloved president and an excellent human being. He wasn’t only the people’s president, but also a great scientist who contributed greatly to India’s health sector.

In 2004, on the occasion of 20th Anniversary of the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF), he launched Anti-Stigma Programme aimed at ending the stigma around schizophrenia and mental health. In his speech, he spoke about the multi-disciplinary dimensions of schizophrenia, the importance of love for healthy growth, and harmony between the physical, emotional and mental health.

In 2011, at Neurocon, in which more than 1,000 neurosurgeons - members of Neurological Society of India and Society Italiana Neurochirurgia, participated at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, he said, “Neurosurgeons today face two challenges. One is to find out what went wrong in the brains of mentally challenged children, and other is causes of brain cancer. We have to see that children of mentally challenged children are born normally,"

"I asked myself, what miracle will happen if the combination of these two societies' members will work together to find out reasons for these two challenges related to the brain," he added.

He urged that a single platform should be created for neurosurgeons and neurologists at a global level.

Apart from spreading awareness about mental health, he worked towards providing affordable healthcare to the poor. Dr Kalam envisioned having a world-class healthcare system in the country by 2020, “The country’s ‘vision 2020’ should include delivery of affordable healthcare system even to the rural poor, apart from making available the best healthcare system.”

Let’s work together towards making our beloved president’s vision a success. We at healthhunt, are doing our bit by empowering people with fact-checked and verified information on health and wellness.

Also, on 17th of November 2018, we’re organising the country’s most premier wellness event ‘The Future Of Wellness’, where there will 100+ brands, celebrity sessions, workshops, and food stalls churning out wholesome food. If you happen to be in Mumbai on 17th of November, join us at the World Trade Centre, Cuffe Parade. (BIG NEWS: Sonakshi Sinha will also be there!)
