De-Stress Yourself With These Simple Techniques
Today’s lifestyle, coupled with higher ambitions and expectations from life, is seriously enough to put pressure on anyone’s nerves. Are we ever relaxed anymore?I have heard people saying that stress is inevitable. ‘You know, what can I do? It’s just impossible to be stress free’. Yet, there prevails another school of thought with a fairly optimistic approach to stress. They are of the opinion that some amount of stress is necessary to motivate a person for the fulfilment of their dreams.
And you? What is your opinion of stress? Nevertheless, here are some amazingly simple techniques to effectively de-stress yourself after a tough, long day:
- Rhythmic breathing – Pranayam is a form of rhythmic breathing. Different people suggest different techniques, but personally, after practicing so many varieties of breathing, I have found my favourite. Even if you have never practiced any form of yoga or pranayam before, try this miraculous 4-7-8 breathing. Anyone can do this breathing technique easily to de-stress and relax. Simply remember the count. Start by breathing in to a count of 4, hold your breath to a count of 7, and then easily exhale to a count of 8. Repeat this exercise 2-5 times at a stretch.
2. Let go – Situations are not always in our control. We can, however, try to control our reactions to them, which add to our stress. ‘Just let go!’ is the powerful mantra which saves mental energy and restores focus. Visualise the situation on the screen of your mind. Now, with the ring finger (which is used to apply ‘tilak’ on auspicious occasions) of your right hand, swipe the screen to shift from a ‘red’ past to the ‘green’ future. Focus on the details of the good that can happen. Now come to the ‘present’ screen of the mind and evaluate – ‘How is your state of mind getting influenced because of holding on to negativity? If it’s doing more harm than good, then act wise and ‘let it go’. This helps in uncluttering the mind, leaving you relaxed with a load being shed; life gets simplified. You may try speaking the mantra out loud to feel the power of it.
3. The power of alpha music – Music has always found a special place amongst effective stress busters and relaxation tools. It triggers an emotional experience where feelings can be soothing or disturbing; add to calmness of the mind or induce aggression. Alpha music is different from any other music form, as it induces alpha brain waves, which is the state required to move into perfect, peaceful sleep. Such a sleep is the perfect time and space for the body to heal itself and retard ageing. To start with, you could try a classical note, or plug into your favourite song to let your mind drift into sweet memories. Even if you’ve never had any interest in music, alpha music can still be an effective tool. It is known to slow down brainwaves, providing a calm and peaceful experience to the mind, body, and spirit. It uplifts your mood, while releasing tension.
4. Pick a sport or some other physical activity – Ever wondered why many companies have a common room with sport facilities? The mind gets preoccupied with a lot of wasteful thoughts, which take away efficiency and joy from our daily lives. Sports helps you feel positive, energetic, and de-stressed. This, when followed by a rejuvenating shower, leave you completely relaxed and re-energised.
If you feel your stress levels aren’t high enough to warrant trying any of the above, just take a shot at any one, right before sleeping, and I assure you, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
