Beware Of Conjunctivitis, The New Disease in Town - Warn Doctors

The doctors warn that this year conjunctivitis may become a raging epidemic. Here is everything you need to know to keep yourselves and your families safe.

The good things about monsoon are masala tea, romantic evening walks, and rainbows. The bad things are dengue, chikungunya, and conjunctivitis.

While India has been busy battling an increasing number of mosquito-borne diseases this season, doctors have now expressed their growing concerns about the nearing conjunctivitis epidemic. Viral conjunctivitis is a highly contagious infection of the conjunctiva (white portion of the eye) that is most commonly caused by adenovirus.  The symptoms of the infection include watery discharge, itchy eyes, redness, and light sensitivity. Since the transmission of the disease occurs via infected individuals’ hands or by contact with infected upper respiratory droplets, fomites, or contaminated swimming pools, it is advisable to avoid shaking hands, sharing towels, napkins, pillow cases, and other fomites around this time. Doctors also recommend regular hand wash and maintaining personal hygiene. Although no effective treatment currently exists for the condition, artificial tears, topical antihistamines, or cold compresses may be useful in alleviating some of the symptoms. Patients are often asked to visit the doctor in 7-10 days after the symptoms begin showing because sometimes complications may also lead to permanent blindness.

The condition affects approximately 40 million people in areas of poor hygiene worldwide. We can choose to add to that number or take proper measures to keep ourselves safe. In short, it is in our hands to allow or prevent conjunctivitis from becoming a mad epidemic.

Latest Study Finds Mediterranean Diet Capable Of Reducing Colorectal Cancer Risk By 86%

Recent searches find colorectal cancer can be controlled by Mediterranean Diet. What is Mediterranean Diet and how it is useful.

It’s no secret that diet plays a key role in keeping our bodies chugging ahead full steam. In fact, most diseases, including cancer, are influenced by our diet in some way or the other, even if diet is not directly responsible for the same. Now, a new study carried out by Tel-Aviv Medical Centre, in Israel, focuses on the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, and claims that those who consume this diet, over a period of time, are at a lower risk of contracting colorectal cancer.

What is colorectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer where polyps develop in the intestine, and is a case of a lump or tumour being found in the colon or rectum. According to the World Health Organization, it is the second most common cancer diagnosed globally. People over the age of 50 are at greater risk, as are those who have a sedentary lifestyle, poor eating habits, and a family history of this cancer. Those who consume a diet that is high in red meat, alcohol, and other fatty foods are at higher risk than those who are generally healthy. Men are also more likely to get this type of cancer than women, but quick, early screening and treatment goes a long way in catching the disease early.

The basics of a Mediterranean diet

The benefits of a Mediterranean diet have been touted for years, but it is only recently that researchers have linked the consumption of this diet to a lowered risk of developing colorectal cancer. A diet high in fruits, vegetables, lentils, nuts, olive oil, and fish, as preferred by the people in the Mediterranean region, is a recipe for good health. According to a study carried out in 2013, people who ate a Mediterranean diet had more than 30 per cent lesser risk of contracting several diseases linked to the heart, and even cancer. Pastas and breads, less meat, and a focus on fruits further helps maintain good health.

Highlights of the study

The study was carried out after surveying over 800 people who were undergoing colonoscopies and the like, by administering a food questionnaire to them. Most of those interviewed were between the ages of 40 and 70, and the results showed that those who had a Mediterranean-rich diet were much better off than those who ate other foods. In addition to eating fresh fruits and vegetables, those who reduced their intake of soft drinks also stood to benefit greatly, states the study. The study also noted that the addition of just 1 or 2 components of the Mediterranean diet could go a long way in ensuring a reduced risk of colorectal cancer. The findings of the study were presented at the ESMO 19th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer.

A New Study Finds Links Between Food Allergy And Anxiety

If you thought that your anxiety has nothing to do with anything else, you’re mistaken.

Every time the season turns, or if there is an extra rush of pollen in the air, allergies kick in. While these seasonal allergies can be an annoyance and an inconvenience, those who live with allergies 24x7 know how hard it is to have a normal existence under the shadow and fear of allergens.

Till now, very little was known about how these allergies impacted mental health. However, a recent study has gone out on a limb to link food allergies to a higher incidence of anxiety, especially in children. What is this research based on, and how accurate are the findings? The study, published in the Journal of Pediatrics, is linking the 2, and has adequate data to support its thesis. According to the findings of the study that was carried out by Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, almost 8 per cent of children in the United States suffer from allergies of some kind, and the numbers seem to be growing.

The experiment

A control group of almost 80 children, between the ages of 4 and 12, was studied in New York and it was found that those who have asthma or food allergies of any sort were more prone to be anxious than those who did not test positive for allergies. The study also noted that almost 57 per cent of the children suffering from food allergies were anxious, and 48 per cent showed symptoms of depression.

The result

It is important to note that the group of children studied belonged to a minority group, and were from the lower socio-economic strata. The researchers believe that since it is overly challenging to take care of children with allergies and a lot more expensive (they can only eat some things), the result is anxiety on both the caregiver’s and the child’s part. It seemed quite apparent that children with allergies find it difficult to fit in, and as a result, often feel anxious. There is a real fear of social rejection and humiliation among this group of children. Proper management of the allergy would, of course, help combat the mental issues at hand.

What next?

Experts believe that the data thrown up by this study is worth looking at. They are also of the opinion that there is very little awareness about food allergies in children and hence, very few people are able to help make their environment comfortable. Now that a link has been established between allergies and mental health, experts believe that early interventions will be possible, and this could help alleviate anxiety among young children, in the long run.

Fancy A Germ-Filled Birthday Cake? Just Blow Out The Candles On It!

Who doesn’t like cake….and germs at birthday parties. Yikes! Think again before you go candle-blowing on your next birthday.

‘Happy birthday’ just took on a whole new meaning – birthday cake in particular. Were you, maybe as a child, told to make sure to blow really hard so you’d get all the candles in one go? Turns out, that’s super unhygienic. Unless you like saliva-encrusted cake frosting, that is.

A new study, conducted by scientists from Clemson University in South Carolina and published in the Journal of Food Research, has revealed that blowing out the candles on a cake could increase the bacteria on the icing by up to…wait for it…1400 per cent! Yes, 1,400!

For the study, the authors created a birthday party like atmosphere, complete with a tin cake and pizza-eating party-goers. The researchers created a mock cake with a piece of polystyrene foam wrapped in foil, and candles on top. The participants were told to smell and eat a slice of pizza, which is typical party food, so that the salivary glands in the mouth would be activated and bacteria would be introduced. They were then asked to blow out the candles. The researchers then collected the bacteria from the tin foil and studied them. This entire exercise was done thrice, with a total of 11 participants, on separate days.

In most cases, the amount of bacteria went up by 15 times, but in one particular case, it went up by 120 times! “Some people blow on the cake and they don’t transfer any bacteria. Whereas you have 1 or 2 people who really for whatever reason…transfer a lot of bacteria”, Professor Paul Dawson, lead author of the study, told The Atlantic.

However, you don’t need to worry – unless a person is sick, you can still safely eat the cake, even with the increased number of bacteria. Most bacteria that are present in our mouths are not harmful, and the ones that are will probably not be present in amounts large enough to cause a problem. “It’s not a big health concern in my perspective", Dawson added. "In reality, if you did this 1,00,000 times, then the chance of getting sick would probably be very minimal.”

Till date, I haven’t heard of anyone falling sick because of eating cake. But if you’re on a diet and don’t want to say so, well, this is as good an excuse as any!

Haryana Bans Liquid Nitrogen In Bars And Restaurants After The Recent Cocktail Accident

The country was left aghast at the incident in Gurgaon that left a man with a hole in his stomach, all thanks to the cocktail he ordered and gulped down before the liquid nitrogen could completely evaporate.

A few months ago, after gulping down a drink infused with translucent smoke, a man ended up in hospital with a hole in his stomach. Ordinarily, smoke does not end up perforating the body, but this was no ordinary smoke – it was liquid nitrogen! According to medical experts, liquid nitrogen is extremely harmful for the body if ingested, and this was proved by this accident.

Suggested Read -> Drinking Liquid Nitrogen Causes Hole In Gurgaon Man’s Stomach

After the incident, a ban has now been proclaimed on the use of liquid nitrogen in drinks and food. Nitrogen boils at -195.8 degrees Celsius, and turns to liquid nitrogen. It is then used to instant-freeze food and drinks, apart from other uses. Liquid nitrogen can cause frostbite and cryogenic burning. “If swallowed, the gas can lead to serious internal damage, destroying tissues in the mouth and intestinal area. Also, as it evaporates, liquid nitrogen releases a high volume of gas, which can tear open the stomach if swallowed in adequately large quantities”, specifies a Chandigarh government order banning the use of liquid nitrogen in food and drinks.

The food and drugs administration department of Haryana issued the ban on Thursday, almost a month after the news of the man rupturing his stomach wall after ingesting liquid nitrogen at a bar in Gurgaon came out. After ingesting the smoky nitrogen, the man experienced extreme pain and bloating, followed by breathlessness. He was admitted to Columbia Asia hospital, where doctors found a gaping hole in his stomach, and he underwent surgery. The man has since recovered.

This whole incident has been a result of extreme carelessness and ignorance. The bartender serving the drink showed carelessness – he should have waited till the liquid nitrogen had dispersed before allowing the said person to drink it. “Staff at restaurants/bars serving nitrogen-based drinks and food had to undergo 7 weeks training, during which they were told to be very attentive while the drinks are served…”, explains Mrintunajay Triwari of Blue Fish Concept hospitality.

Baby Born 'Pregnant' With Twin Brother, India Witnesses Rare 'Foetus-In-Foetu' Case

In one of the rarest of rare cases, Mumbai, India saw a baby boy being born with his half-formed twin inside his abdomen.

We think we’ve seen it all and heard it all in today’s day and age. But this one stumped everyone, even doctors in Mumbai.

Doctors at Bilal Hospital in Mumbra were in for a surprise when radiologist Dr Thorat was giving a 19-year-old pregnant woman a routine scan. She noticed that there was something inside the foetal sac of the foetus – another foetus.

Their suspicions were confirmed when the mother gave birth a few days later. On closer examination, they realised that there was another foetus in the newborn baby’s abdomen.

Dr Thorat said, “I could see bones of the upper and lower limbs of the foetus. The unique thing about it was I could see a tiny head with the brain inside.”

Can you imagine the shock? This kind of abnormality, a 'foetus-in-fetu' twin pregnancy, is extremely rare and there are only about 200 such cases recorded around the world. ‘Foetus-in-fetu’ is a developmental abnormality, in which a mass of tissue, resembling a foetus, forms inside the body. The baby had a foetus with a half-formed body of a boy, with a brain, arms, and legs.

The newborn baby had to undergo surgery to remove the 7 cm mass in his stomach. The mother and child are both recovering well after the surgery.

This Is How You Can Gain Weight Without Compromising On Health

Gaining weight is not synonymous with ill-health, especially for those who’ve struggled to put on some their whole lives. Here’s the right way to go about it.How often have you tried your best to put on weight? You’ve purposely indulged in high-calorie foods, only to discover that you haven’t gained an ounce of weight. On your friend’s suggestion, you hit the gym too – all in vain. You’ve remained the ‘skinny binny’ everyone has always laughed at! Sounds familiar, right? Don’t despair, as today we bring to you 5 easy and quick ways to add some meat to that bony frame of yours. Read on!
  • You are what you eat – We aren’t asking you to stuff your face with just anything, but if you are serious about gaining weight, you should have enough good calories. You don’t want to be just fat, which is easy to be, with junk food and aerated drinks, but you want healthy fat in your body, which means a good amount of proteins, carbs and healthy fats.
  • Eat energy-dense foods once in 4 hours – Think of your body like an engine, in which your heart is constantly beating, and your blood is constantly getting circulated. When you skip meals, you deprive your body of fuel, which, in turn, requires your body to use the ‘energy piggy bank’, including muscle mass. In order to prevent this, space your meals between 3-5 hours, and maintain this routine. Also choose nutrient-rich foods, such as dried fruits with no added sugar or preservatives, toasted oats, bananas, avocado, coconut, and dark chocolate.
  • Do you catch up on enough sleep? – You need sleep, which helps destroy unhealthy fats and tone the bod, while giving you a healthy digestive system. Research shows that people who sleep for 8-9 hours a night gain weight the healthy way than those who don’t! Stop being the night owl, and get your beauty sleep.
  • Consume a meal before bed – While we sleep, our bodies work to heal and repair the body. This is why medical experts suggest a healthy snack right before we hit the sack. This helps supply fresh nutrients to the body, and gain weight in a healthy way. Consuming gluten-free alternatives would be the right thing to do before you sleep, say experts. Ensure that it has enough veggies and fruits added to it, maybe with a dash of cheese, to include good calories!
  • Be workout wise! – You have to be wise when working out. Experts suggest 30 minutes of resistance training and weight training to add weight to the body, instead of cardio everyday. Rowing, deadlifts, push ups, and squats are compound movements that can help increase weight. Do speak to your gym trainer for more help!

For Those Who Have Tried Everything To Combat Bleeding Gums, Here Are 5 Simple Tricks

Ouch. It hurts, shows up in close-up photos, and looks like there’s a murder scene in your mouth! Need more reasons to say goodbye to those bleeding gums?

It’s a hard life. And seeing a bit of blood while brushing certainly doesn’t make it any easier. Gums can bleed for a number of reasons, including:

  • Gum disease
  • Brushing too hard
  • Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy, puberty, menstruation, and menopause
  • Ulcers or sores in the mouth
  • Lack of certain vitamins
  • Clotting disorders
  • Medications such as blood thinners, and birth control pills
  • Ill-fitting dentures
  • Diabetes
  • Heart problems
  • Cancer

Bleeding of the gums is usually an early sign of gum disease. The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis (hello, bad breath and sensitive teeth), the second stage is called periodontitis, and the third is known as advanced periodontitis. If proper care is not taken, it can eventually lead to the loss of teeth.

The first thing you need to do when you spot blood oozing from the gums is to see your dentist. Having said that, there are a few things you can do to prevent and combat bleeding gums:

Oral hygiene – If proper oral hygiene is not followed, the number of bacteria in the mouth increase and cause plaque, ultimately causing gum disease. Sometimes, brushing too hard can also cause gums to swell and bleed.

  • To combat this, both brushing and flossing should be done twice a day, and in a gentle manner, so as to not create discomfort for the gums. Use a brush with soft bristles.
  • Don’t forget to clean your tongue.
  • Massaging your gums with your fingers twice a day, post brushing and flossing, is also important.
  • Rinse your mouth well after eating, as this helps remove food particles from the crevices, leaving less food for the bacteria to feed upon.
  • You can also ask your dentist about a water pick, which is like a high-powered jet that removes food particles from those hard-to-reach areas in the mouth.

Rinsing and gargling – Rinsing or gargling with warm salt water will help get rid of the bacteria in the mouth, leading to healthy teeth and gums. You can also mix water with 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide, alum, or lemon juice, and use as a rinse. Since alum is a natural antiseptic, it helps to tighten the gums, thereby reducing space for food particles to get stuck between the teeth and the gums.

Cold compress – If the bleeding has begun, applying a cold compress as (gentle) pressure will help to temporarily stop it by reducing blood flow. Take a few ice cubes or an ice pack, wrap it in a towel or cloth, and apply to the side of the mouth where bleeding has occurred.

Diet – A balanced diet will help keep your gums healthy and prevent inflammation, bleeding, and redness. Make sure to include good amounts of vitamin C and calcium in your diet. Remember, bacteria love carbs and sugar, so go slow on those.

Chill out – If you are constantly stressed, the cortisol levels in your body will rise. Cortisol is also known as the stress hormone, and can cause inflammation and bleeding of the gums, while suppressing the body’s immune system. Take out some time for yourself, every day, to calm your mind and body down.

Apart from the above, you should also avoid smoking, as smoking irritates the gums and causes them to inflame. Mouthwashes that contain alcohol should also be avoided. Cloves or clove oil, both of which are known to work very well in the case of toothaches, may also be helpful in combating bleeding gums. You can also apply a used tea bag or honey to the affected areas. Tea contains tannins, and honey has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, both of which are helpful in controlling inflammation and bleeding.

Next On The Faecal Bacteria List: McDonald's, KFC, And Burger King

First Starbucks, and now McDonald\'s, KFC, and Burger King. Looks like faecal bacteria does not discriminate.

If you’ve been trying to convince yourself to go off fast food, this latest piece of news will work like a charm. While we always focus on the food, this time, it was the ice that was in the hot seat. An investigative programme run by the BBC, titled Watchdog, tested the ice used in beverages at fast food giants McDonald's, KFC, and Burger King’s outlets in the United Kingdom, and all 10 samples were found to be contaminated with faecal bacteria, which leads to a number of gastro diseases and can be problematic.

The coliform bacteria, which is better known as the poo bacteria, was found in all the drinks that used ice at these 3 chains. 7 samples from KFC, 6 from Burger King, and 3 from McDonald’s were found contaminated.

While all 3 expressed their displeasure and said it was unfortunate that such bacteria was found, hygiene at fast food outlets has always been suspect. There have been reports of food contamination as well, but one would blindly assume that iced drinks would pass the test. While KFC reportedly shut down its ice machines for inspection and said that health and hygiene was one of its top priorities, the bottom line is that very little is done to enforce checks on health and safety standards, either internally or by the government agency in charge.

And it is not just these 3 brands under fire. A few weeks prior to this, samples of iced drinks from Costa Coffee, Starbucks, and Caffè Nero were also found contaminated with the same bacteria. So the next time you head out, carry your own bottle to quench your thirst, and keep bacteria at bay.

We Are At The Verge Of A Scientific Discovery That Could Bring About A Cure For Chronic Pain

A research study in the UK has led to a scientific discovery that brings hope for everyone with chronic pain.

Ask the person who has been experiencing that constant, excruciating pain in the arm or the frozen muscles in the neck area. There cannot be an ‘exact estimation’ of the pain the person has gone through. The suffering can only be understood by the person who has gone through it, with every moment being defined by that pain.

But there is light at the end of that painful tunnel. This relief comes in the form of bright hope from the research findings of the study conducted on approximately 16,000 people in the UK by researchers at Universities of Bath and Oxford.

All of the 16,000 people were suffering from a minimally understood condition of chronic pain, complex regional pain syndrome, or CRPS, which affects limbs. The subjects of the study suffered from enervating pain, swelling, temperature changes, and movement difficulties since several months. CRPS symptoms included burning, stinging, stabbing, or throbbing pain while going about one’s routine.

It all started in the Bath and Oxford Universities where scientists wanted to understand the ‘how and why’ of CRPS. The subjects were studies regarding their ability and quickness in processing visual information on and around the side of the suffering limb, and comparing it to the ability and quickness of processing it on the other side. It was found that information on the side of the painful limb was processed more slowly than visual information on the other side. And the outcome, as explained by the lead author, Dr. Janet Bultitude, is that the constant pain caused by CRPS made the interpretation of pain, as well as that of movement, difficult. What this means is that since the information is visual, and has nothing to do with arm or leg itself, but with the way the information is processed by the brain.

CRPS is usually the result of damage due to surgery or injury. However, the pain that occurs is much more than what would have been incurred due to the damage itself. Attention-related treatment therapies could be useful in developing effective remedial therapies for CRPS. All of this will be possible by using computer algorithms for interpreting MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) data of the brain to know about the presence of pain.

A step ahead of this brain activity is the identification of oxidised phospholipids (OxPL) as novel targets in chronic inflammatory pain. Having identified the hallmarks of inflammation, the countdown has started for the lifesaving ‘Healer Ginnie’, especially for post-surgery wounds and rheumatoid arthritis.

7 Out Of 10 Indians: You May Be Vitamin D Deficient, And Not Know It Lakshmi Devan
12 May 2017Array min read

Feeling lethargic? Falling sick too often? Been low lately? Does the word Vitamin D ring a bell?

The body needs vitamin D to ensure healthy bones and teeth, adequate calcium and phosphorus absorption, better insulin level regulation, and thus, optimal diabetes management. It is also believed to have a protective influence against cancer and multiple sclerosis. However, in a recent study by Metropolis Healthcare that examined 14,96,683 patients, 70-100 per cent of participants were found to be vitamin D deficient, varying with the demographics tested. The results paint a rather scary picture, with the deficiency just as prevalent among housewives as in athletes, and even doctors! A vitamin D deficiency has always been linked to high rates of rickets, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and infections such as tuberculosis, in India. Are you in the 7 out of 10 Indians to suffer from a vitamin D deficiency? Here’s how to know:

  • Head sweating – Doctors check for head sweating in newborns, because it is believed to be a classic symptom of a vitamin D deficiency.
  • Bone aches, fragile bones, and fractures – Often misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, a vitamin D deficiency causes a defect in the input of calcium into the collagen matrix in the skeleton, leading to throbbing pains and aches. Vitamin D works with calcium for healthy bone renewal, and to ensure strong bones and teeth. A deficiency of such a vital nutrient would then mean a direct impact on the bones and teeth, often leading to fragile bones and fractures, that happen at the drop of a hat.
  • Feeling ‘blue’ – Serotonin is a brain chemical that has been seen to rise with exposure to light, and fall with a decrease in the same. Studies in the past have found that people with low levels of vitamin D are more prone to being depressed. It wouldn’t be a surprise to find out that you are deficient in the vitamin, if you’ve been feeling rather low lately.
  • Flu and infections – Do you fall prey to frequent respiratory infections and flu, in the winters? Results from observational studies revealed an increased risk of both lower and upper respiratory tract infections in people with the deficiency.
  • Fatigue – Even though the exact link between vitamin D and tiredness is not known, it is confirmed to be one of the first few symptoms of the deficiency that shows up.

Those are the symptoms. However, a lot of times, the deficiency is completely asymptomatic and undetectable, until it progresses to severe stages. The best thing to do is to include as many vitamin D-rich foods (e.g.: fatty fish, such as tuna, mackerel, and salmon; milk and milk products; eggs etc.) in your diet as possible, get plenty of sunshine, and most importantly, get regular health checks and blood tests.

Rinse with cold water, and only apply shampoo when the pack has completely left your hair.
  • Nutritional benefits of this mask: Packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and potassium, bananas are great for boosting natural growth, and for moisturising your hair. Extremely effective for thin and weak hair, this mask helps in strengthening hair follicles, while nourishing your dry and brittle hair with vitamin E. Honey and olive oil are packed with healing properties, which helps in regulating natural oil production, while keeping your scalp healthy.
  • Aloe vera, flax seed, and butter mask
  • How to make this mask: Start by boiling 2 cups of water and 3 tablespoons of flax seeds in a pan. Boil them for a good 10 minutes, before straining the flax seeds. Blend together the flax seed water with 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel, 1 tablespoon of butter, and 2 tablespoons of honey. Once the mixture has cooled off, cover each strand of your hair with this mixture, from the root to the tip. Let it sit for a minimum of 45 minutes, before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.
  • Nutritional benefits of this mask: This protein-rich mask is an intense conditioning gel-cum-pack that helps in boosting the volume of your hair, moisturising rough hair, and making the ends smooth. Flax seeds are a rich source of protein, vitamin B6, omega-3 fatty acids, and iron, all of which are useful for preventing hair loss and promoting healthy and shiny hair growth. Aloe vera, honey, and butter are great moisturising agents, which are sure to leave your hair incredibly soft and voluminous.
  • Homemade egg mask
  • How to make this mask: First, start by separating the egg yolk and the egg white. If you have oily hair, you will need egg whites, while dry hair will need egg yolks. People with normal hair can use a whole egg. Now, beat 1 egg and add 1 cup of milk and 2 tablespoons of olive oil to form a gooey, eggy mixture. Whisk well, and squeeze 1 lime into this mixture. Gently rub this mask onto your scalp for 15 minutes. Cover your hair with a disposable shower cap, and let the mixture sit on your scalp for 15 more minutes. Use an organic, fruit-based shampoo to wash your hair. Use cold water.
  • Nutritional benefits of this mask: Eggs are packed with iron, protein, and vitamins A, B, and D. They are great for nourishing your hair roots, encouraging hair growth, preventing hair breakage, preventing hair loss, and giving a natural, glossy shine to your hair.

Go on, try these recipes and show your hair some much-deserved pampering and love!

The Eye Of Shiva: Rudraksha For The Body, Mind, And Spirit Anjali Nayyar
25 May 2017Array min read

Rudraksha: Rudra + aksha (Rudra’s eye) or the ‘eye of Shiva’ – sound familiar? Rudraksha - the holy bead that is worn to attract wellbeing on physical, mental, and spiritual levels.

Held in utmost reverence by Hindus, rudraksha is a bead worn by people across faiths, all around the world. It has wondrous properties that many swear by. Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) is actually a fruit of the rudraksha tree. According to holy Hindu texts, rudraksha was formed from the tears of Shiva, when he opened his eyes and wept on seeing the plight of humanity. Rudraksha is a boon given to humanity to alleviate the suffering of man.

Body

Scientifically speaking, the rudraksha is made up of many elements that are good for our body – carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, aluminum, gold, cobalt, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous etc. The leaves and bark of the rudraksha tree have medicinal properties. People living near this tree use the leaves, bark, and fruit to make medicine for blood pressure, anxiety, skin diseases, headaches etc. Rudraksha has electromagnetic properties that improve the performance of the heart, and consequently, that of the whole body.

Mind

At a mental level, rudraksha helps bust stress, which is the root of a lot of our troubles – mental and physical. The electromagnetic pulses emitted by the bead soothe the nerves and help relax the mind. This has a positive effect on daily living, behaviour, and interactions. In fact, the quality of one’s life improves, and is infused with positivity – this helps alleviate negative feelings like anger, depression, and anxiety. Also, it has been observed that an extract of the rudraksha helps in improving learning, and in memory development.

Spirit

To speak of the spiritual properties of the rudraksha would need an entire book. However, most sages and yogis have rudraksha beads as their constant companions. Why? Because rudraksha helps one along the path of spirituality. The wearer of this bead becomes a master of enhanced spiritual powers (they first need to be cultivated, though). Powers of meditation, visualisation, yoga etc. get a boost if one wears rudraksha beads.

More about the beads

Rudraksha bearing trees are found in the Himalayan belt in India, Nepal, and also in the Indonesian archipelago. The fruit of these trees are bluish-black in colour, and when they dry up, the outer covering is removed to extract the rudraksha bead. The bead has a corrugated skin, and lines or channels (known as ‘mukh’) on it – anywhere between 1 and 21 (maybe even more sometimes). Each bead gets its name from the number of channels present – 1 mukhi (1 channel), 2 mukhi (2 channels), 8 mukhi (8 channels) and so on. The number of channels present determines the significance and healing properties of the rudraksha. Let’s take a look at a few:

For the body:

  • 7 mukhi (7 channels) for good health, wealth, and happiness.
  • 9 mukhi (9 channels) for energy, power, and dynamism.
  • 10 mukhi (10 channels) shields the body from negative influences.
  • 11 mukhi (11 channels) to alleviate stomach disorders, and liver and breast diseases.

For the mind:

  • 2 mukhi (2 channels) for better relationships – family, friends, business.
  • 3 mukhi (3 channels) for purification of the mind – removal of sin, depression, anger, anxiety, fear, guilt.
  • 4 mukhi (4 channels) for intelligence, memory power, concentration, learning.
  • 5 mukhi (5 channels) for peace – removal of hypertension, and emotional tension.
  • 13 mukhi (13 channels) for name, fame, and power.

For the spirit:

  • 1 mukhi (1 channel) for spiritual growth.
  • 8 mukhi (8 channels) for all kinds of attainments (riddhis and siddhis).
  • 11 mukhi (11 channels) for practice of meditation and yoga.
  • 14 mukhi (14 channels) for better visualisation, meditation, and sixth sense.
  • 15-21 mukhi (15-21 channels) for attainment of mystical powers.

Mental Wellbeing

Today, what we all need most is peace of mind, and mind you, it doesn’t come easy. To find tranquility, you must let go, and to learn to do that, you must embark on a journey for your own sake. We know that being healthy means so much more than just a healthy body. It means a healthy mind – a state of complete mental wellbeing. We welcome personal experiences, expert views, meditation techniques, and other holistic ways of achieving mindfulness.

Nutrition

The human body is perfectly designed by nature, and how we fuel it is important. In order to climb the Everest, backpack around the globe, get that promotion, break the world record for baking the largest apple pie, or anything else that you want to do in life – it is important that you and your body are on the same page. And surprisingly enough, of all aspects of health, nutrition is the most ignored or misinterpreted. No more fad diets, ‘magical detoxes’, or weight-loss powders. Nutrition is simple science...and lots of taste. Submissions within this category will include articles on health through foods, recipes, juices and smoothies, and natural and sustainable ways to achieve weight goals.

Fitness

We walk, run, swim, cycle, dance, workout – all to stay fit. Even though the end goals may be different for everyone, fitness, at the end of the day, means something that promises a healthy, fulfilling life. It means training your body to do better each day in whatever ways you want it to. Submit within this category if your article is to do with any form of physical fitness like yoga, running, muscle building, a success story, or any aspect of physical health.

Organic Beauty

Most of what you put on your skin is absorbed right into the bloodstream (Need proof? Think nicotine patches, or birth control patches). This is why a lot of the world is going back to their roots. Think organic. Think of all gifts of nature you could use, that could enrich your body, without all the chemicals and preservatives. Organic beauty is taking a stand for yourself – it is a lifestyle. If you have written about hair, skin, natural remedies, ayurveda, or alternate therapies, this is where you need to be.

Love

Love for a friend, family member, or lover – all such profound, complex emotions and connections. Oh love, love, love! It has the power to heal the soul, make a saint out of a criminal, and basically, just bring a smile to your face even on the most dismal of days. There are no rules, no laws, no policies, and absolutely no one manual when it comes to relationships. But oh, wouldn’t we all like a little help once in a while? Our broad categories include relationships, friendship, dating, sex, parenting, and other aspects of love.
