To tea or not to tea, is the question here.
We all know the sweet satisfaction of that first, steaming sip of masala chai in the morning. However, did you know that it could be the reason for your mid-afternoon slump? The caffeine and sugar kick in immediately to help start your day, and the milk leaves you feeling full. Temporarily. After a few hours, you’ve crashed! You’re craving something sweet after lunch, or a pick-me-up coffee in the afternoon. Sound familiar? Simply replacing that morning cup of chai with a cup of hot water and lemon can benefit your overall health in many ways.
Digestion – There are few easier ways to aid your daily digestion than a cup of hot water with a generous chunk of lemon squeezed in. The pectin in lemon stimulates your GI tract, helping your body absorb nutrients more effectively and keeps everything…moving regularly, shall we say?
Metabolism – When used daily in addition to a healthy diet, hot water and lemon has been known to help speed up metabolism and assist with weight loss, as it flushes out toxins from your liver. Don’t forget that you’ll also be cutting calories early in the morning by cutting out that sweet, milky chai or coffee!
Immunity – Lemons are a great source of vitamin C, which is a key ingredient in keeping yourself healthy during cold and flu season. Up your immunity with a cup of this elixir in the a.m. It will help to keep your body alkalised, which in turn reduces inflammation. And if the cold does have you down, steeping some grated ginger and adding a dollop of honey in will ease your symptoms, and clear your passageways.
Clear skin – All the good stuff you’ve read about so far – the detoxification of the liver, and the digestive tract functioning better – has the added benefit of leaving you with clearer skin!
There’s nothing wrong with caffeine here and there – sometimes we all want the delicious kick of an iced coffee, or the pleasure of sipping tea with a friend. I personally love the bitterness of a strong cup of Earl Grey every so often. But making it a want and not a need certainly is empowering!
Once you experience the amazing benefits of starting your day with hot water and lemon, you won’t want to go back to that morning cup of chai. Try it for a week or two, and let us know how you fared!
The problem with all good things in life is that they come with some pain...or a lot. Thankfully, we’ve got the hack - painless exercise. Here’s how.
You’ve joined a gym, or maybe dedicated an hour of workout at home. Good for you, and we are proud of you! But in most cases, people who join a workout routine are very excited in the beginning, only for the enthusiasm to taper off. This could be because of various reasons – lack of time, lack of enthusiasm, no workout buddy, and yes, mostly because of early workout pains. The moment your loose muscles and fat tissues in the body are made to do a certain routine each day, they start aching, which is normal for the first few days. But don’t give up! We tell you 5 painless ways to stick to that workout routine from today.
Take the stairs – Pledge to take the stairs for a month at work or at home, instead of the elevator. This is because taking the stairs makes you burn more calories and keeps you fit, and there’s hardly any pain involved. Cardio benefits are aplenty when you take the stairs, say experts. Start with a flight of stairs at work from today, and increase the flight by 1 each week, or as per your comfort. A good mini-workout right before your meetings will surely work wonders!
Walk to work – If not the whole 8 kilometres, you should walk at least 1. If you do so, you painlessly work the body into a light but effective exercise routine. Your visual senses will be treated to the goodness around too. Chalk out different routes per week, and allocate time for the same. Walk a few blocks to the destination you choose, and let the body get healthier without the painful task of burning it out on a treadmill.
Bike your way to college/work – Why spend money on a stationary bike when you can dust the old bike at home and take it out for a spin each day? Did you know, workplaces across the West prefer their employees biking to work, rather than bringing in their own cars? Such companies hand out reduced health insurance policies and premiums as rewards. You can also form a college biking group, create biking paths with colleagues and friends, and avoid the traffic rush and jam each day. In addition to that, biking is a great way to get those beefy legs, firm calves, and a slimmer waist and butt – what’s your excuse to not bike to work tomorrow?
Go out and play – Every evening, take a walk by the park with your kids and your pet, and play ball with them. If your daily gym routine or workout at home isn’t interesting enough, toss a frisbee with the little ones, play a sport with them, or just run around. You get to spend quality time with your nearest ones, and have fun too. This not only motivates you to burn your daily dose of calories, but also encourages the whole family to work out.
Do something new – Exercises don’t only mean pumping iron and running on a treadmill, which can quickly become boring. Broaden your perspective when it comes to working out, and think of a new way to make fitness your solace. Be it CrossFit training or boxing, Pilates or belly dancing, pole dancing or Zumba, just give it a go.
Experts say that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit, so go ahead and give it a try! Just don’t sit around and sip green tea, wondering why your belly fat isn’t leaving you, not when you have many more ways other than these 5 to have fun with, while burning calories!
All there is to say is that if they can do it, you can do it too!
Celebrities seem so…perfect, don’t they? Chiselled bodies, glamorous hair, and great lives! But in between their flawless Instagram posts and ostentatious red carpet appearances, we forget that they’re human too. Maybe they look ridiculously gorgeous when they’re down with influenza, but they still get sick, all right? The truth is that many celebrities continue to live with incurable diseases every day, smiling through it all unwaveringly. I do wonder how they do it, don’t you? Phew.
Here are the 5 celebrities who deserve the Nobel Prize for inspiration (and I really wish there was one) for just marching on, doing their thing, and changing the world one day at a time with their smiles, when they could just let the disease turn their lives upside down. It must take some serious strength, and this is the time to acknowledge and applaud them!
Selena Gomez – In her acceptance speech at the American Music Awards, Selena spoke out about her disease – lupus, an autoimmune condition, that can damage any part of the body, including joints, skin, and internal organs, because the immune system is unable to tell the difference between foreign invaders and healthy tissues. She took a break from everything while she underwent chemotherapy. Some of the symptoms of lupus are swollen joints, fever, fatigue, rashes, chest pain, hair loss, anaemia, depression, anxiety, panic attacks etc. There are no known cures for lupus, but the symptoms of the disease can be controlled via drugs and other treatments. Meanwhile, Selena is back to focusing on her music and on being awesome, and she isn’t in a mood to stop!
Charlie Sheen – In December 2015, Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen revealed that he had been diagnosed with HIV, and was undergoing a viral suppressant treatment. Charlie Sheen is well known for his flamboyant lifestyle, dangerous habits, and more-than-you-can-count-on-one-hand lady friends, much like the character he played on the TV series. After a successful round of treatment, he has been speaking out about the new treatment options, and how it is important to remove the stigma associated with the condition. Go, Charlie!
Cher – Not a lot of people know that Cher has been battling myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) since 1991. Also called chronic fatigue syndrome, the condition is characterised by long-term fatigue and other symptoms, that limit a person's ability to carry out ordinary daily activities. But that hasn’t stopped Cher from being fabulous. If she can do it with ME, you can at least get your bum off the bed and do that thing you’ve been putting away. I’m motivated, Cher.
Alec Baldwin – Alec Baldwin has been private about his tryst with Lyme disease, but he mentioned it briefly on a talk show in 2011. Avril Lavigne was more vocal about her encounters with the same disease, saying that it caused her to be bed-ridden for 5 months! Lyme disease is an infection that is transmitted through the bite of a tick, infected with a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi, and is symptomised by an expanding, circular rash, along with fever, joint pain, headaches, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches that may lead to facial paralysis, when left untreated. But this is to say that even all that didn’t stop Alec from giving us 30 Rock, and kudos to him for that.
Morgan Freeman – The ‘God of Hollywood’, Morgan Freeman is as fervent as a teenager, with the charm and calm of a man. But the point of amazement is that he manages to do all that with a condition that makes it difficult for him to sit, stand, walk, and in fact, do anything at all. Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal disorder, characterised by widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep, memory, and mood issues. It could begin after a physical trauma (a car accident in Freeman’s case), surgery, infection, or psychological stress. Some research studies also suggest that the condition amplifies pain by altering brain signals. How does Morgan Freeman be Morgan Freeman, despite all that pain? Now you know why he is a legend!
I am truly in awe of how these celebrities decided not to dwell on these little speed bumps in their lives. Maybe celebrities shouldn’t be applauded for attending fancy events in designer clothes; maybe they should be celebrated for their courage, strength, and resilience, that the media seldom seems to talk about. Still, I am inspired to say the least, and here’s hoping that you are too.

Today, what we all need most is peace of mind, and mind you, it doesn’t come easy. To find tranquility, you must let go, and to learn to do that, you must embark on a journey for your own sake. We know that being healthy means so much more than just a healthy body. It means a healthy mind – a state of complete mental wellbeing. We welcome personal experiences, expert views, meditation techniques, and other holistic ways of achieving mindfulness.
The human body is perfectly designed by nature, and how we fuel it is important. In order to climb the Everest, backpack around the globe, get that promotion, break the world record for baking the largest apple pie, or anything else that you want to do in life – it is important that you and your body are on the same page. And surprisingly enough, of all aspects of health, nutrition is the most ignored or misinterpreted. No more fad diets, ‘magical detoxes’, or weight-loss powders. Nutrition is simple science...and lots of taste. Submissions within this category will include articles on health through foods, recipes, juices and smoothies, and natural and sustainable ways to achieve weight goals.
We walk, run, swim, cycle, dance, workout – all to stay fit. Even though the end goals may be different for everyone, fitness, at the end of the day, means something that promises a healthy, fulfilling life. It means training your body to do better each day in whatever ways you want it to. Submit within this category if your article is to do with any form of physical fitness like yoga, running, muscle building, a success story, or any aspect of physical health.
Most of what you put on your skin is absorbed right into the bloodstream (Need proof? Think nicotine patches, or birth control patches). This is why a lot of the world is going back to their roots. Think organic. Think of all gifts of nature you could use, that could enrich your body, without all the chemicals and preservatives. Organic beauty is taking a stand for yourself – it is a lifestyle. If you have written about hair, skin, natural remedies, ayurveda, or alternate therapies, this is where you need to be.
Love for a friend, family member, or lover – all such profound, complex emotions and connections. Oh love, love, love! It has the power to heal the soul, make a saint out of a criminal, and basically, just bring a smile to your face even on the most dismal of days. There are no rules, no laws, no policies, and absolutely no one manual when it comes to relationships. But oh, wouldn’t we all like a little help once in a while? Our broad categories include relationships, friendship, dating, sex, parenting, and other aspects of love.
