Women Are Happier Being Single, According To A New Report Vallari Sharma
13 Feb 2018Array min read

According to Professor Emily Grundy, this contrast is because of the fact that women have to put in more effort and labour into a relationship than men.

[:en]

“Single |sin•gle| (adjective)—Too fabulous to settle.”  ―Mandy Hale, The Single `Woman: Life, Love, and a Dash of Sass

For all the ladies who’ve got no ‘special someone’ on this Valentine’s Day, we’ve got some good news for you! According to a new research, women tend to be happier when they’re single. As reported by consumer analyst Mintel, 61 per cent of single women are happy being single, compared to 49 per cent of single men.

While conducting the survey, researchers noted that while only 25 per cent of single women were actively looking for a relationship, more than 35 per cent single men were leaving no stone unturned to get into one.

According to Professor Emily Grundy, this contrast is because of the fact that women have to put in more effort and labour into a relationship than men. Be it spending more time and money on the upkeep of their appearance to putting in more efforts to resolve problems, for women being in a relationship amounts to a lot of work—both physical and emotional.

“There’s evidence that women spend longer on domestic tasks than men and I think they also do more emotional work—so they still do more housework and cooking and things as well as more emotional labour,” Dr  Grundy told The Telegraph.

Dr Emily Grundy further highlights that women are better at socializing by themselves and are more likely to have friends as compared to men. “Women tend to be better at having alternative social networks and other confidantes whereas men tend to rely quite heavily on their wives for that and have fewer other social ties,” she said.

Another popular explanation for this research came from Professor Bella DePaulo, a social scientist at the University of California. She stated, “Women, especially, are more likely to enjoy solitude than men. Single women find being alone is a wonderful time for restoration, creativity, and personal growth. And there are so many more opportunities to create the life you want, such as traveling, following your passions, and doing meaningful work.” Ladies, now that science has proven that single women are happier, stop complaining about not having anyone to gift you roses. Instead, buy yourself a bottle of Rosé and enjoy the charm of singlehood for as long as you can.

Beautiful Skin From Within: The One Thing Your Beauty Routine Is Missing Lakshmi Devan

This article is for all those people who have never given meditation a fair try, and have held back, despite a plethora of health benefits. It is also for all the dewy-skinned, shiny-faced meditationists, who didn’t know what meditation was doing for them.

[:en]

I think I finally know why all these meditationists (my word for people who have cracked the code to meditation, unlike myself) have that rosy glow, that youthfulness, that enviable aura about them.

I’d always heard enough and more about how meditation helps with stress, improves cognitive function, makes us self-aware, increases attention span and concentration, boosts immunity, and basically brings down our healthcare bill, but here's what I never knew – it blesses you with pulchritudinous skin (fine, I consulted a thesaurus for that one, whatever).

This article is for all those people who have never given meditation a fair try, and have held back, despite a plethora of health benefits. It is also for all the dewy-skinned, shiny-faced meditationists, who didn’t know what meditation was doing for them, all this while.

Beautiful Skin From Within: The One Thing Your Beauty Routine Is Missing-1

Presenting to you, 5 ways that meditation gives you beautiful (or shall I say pulchritudinous?) skin from within:

  • Chi factor – Meditation is believed to unleash the vital energies in the body, and help you blossom into a full flower. ‘Chi’ or ‘qi’ energies, as they’re called, cover all the cells and tissues of your skin, pumping them with youthfulness, and bathing them with life essence.
  • Defeat ageing – The Chinese Taoists, who’ve always focused on creating techniques that vitalise your physical body, have forever advocated meditation as the best way to heal disease, defeat ageing, and look great (at least for your age).
  • Wrinkles no more – We know that stress accelerates ageing in the body, and gives you grey hair and crow’s feet way before they’re supposed to come knocking. Also, stress causes blood flow to be channelled away from the skin, towards the muscles and the internal organs, leaving your skin starved. And we know that meditation beats stress. You put the first 2 and the second 2 together, and what do you get? That’s right, meditation basically means wrinkle-free skin for longer.
  • Oxygenation, and everything else – Meditation stimulates blood flow and oxygenation throughout the body, aiding in toxin elimination and skin rejuvenation. It helps you be present in every moment, and make logical decisions and smarter choices, that could be good for one’s body, like quitting a bad habit, taking up gardening, or going on that much needed trip.

  • Skin disease, what’s that? – Research by the University of Sheffield showed that meditation had a positive effect on patients with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne, and vitiligo. In one study, patients who listened to meditation tapes healed 4 times faster than non-meditators.

Psychodermatology, an emerging field in research, studies the interaction between the mind and the skin, and works to understand the connection between psychological disturbances, mental disorders, and their manifestations on the skin. And with whatever we’ve learnt so far, it is safe to say that meditation bridges that gap between the mental, physical, and emotional states of the body, and impacts health in marvellous ways.

This Successful Lawyer Lost 24 Kilos In A Year! We Interview Her And Find Out Her Secret Lakshmi Devan

That’s what successful lawyer, Neeha Nagpal AKA Iron Lady, can be called an epitome of. From shedding 24 kilograms to fighting PCOD, rosacea and diabetes, the mission she embarked on a year ago is truly inspirational and enlightening to say the least.

“What the mind believes, the body can achieve.”

That’s what successful lawyer, Neeha Nagpal AKA Iron Lady, can be called an epitome of. From shedding 24 kilograms to fighting PCOD, rosacea and diabetes, the mission she embarked on a year ago is truly inspirational and enlightening to say the least.

In a candid discussion with Neeha, I ask her everything anyone who has set a resolution to lose weight this year would want to know. You’re in for a rollercoaster ride.

Question: When were you the unhealthiest in your life? I want to know the difference in your overall health now and then.

I was always a big girl. But my explosion from a chubby, cute kid into an obese young woman happened at the onset of puberty, around 12-13. I struggled in the next few years to lose weight because it had brought about PCOD in my early 20s. Temporarily, it was brought under control with medication.

I lost my father in the following years, started working like a maniac with no sense of anything, and as a result, gained even more weight. For a while, I appeased myself by pretending to be on a diet…but who was I fooling? By June 2013, I had developed extreme PCOD and was pre-diabetic.

Towards the end of 2015, I put on a lot more weight and parked at 92kgs. It wasn’t just that I was in fact grossly overweight for my frame, but I also felt lethargic, unhappy and uncomfortable in my own skin all the time. By January 2016, I started getting headaches every day and was popping Panadol pills like candy!

That’s what successful lawyer, Neeha Nagpal AKA Iron Lady, can be called an epitome of. From shedding 24 kilograms to fighting PCOD, rosacea and diabetes

Till May that year, I saw a GP every week. I had constant headaches, a runny stomach and extreme episodes of stomach pain. I got blisters all over, developed neck and shoulder issues, and suffered from extreme rosacea. Everything that could go wrong had already gone wrong.

I was asked to get a thorough blood test done. On 1st June 2016, my blood report almost gave the doctors a proverbial heart attack! I mean, I was mentally going through so much anxiety because of my health that I needed therapy. I was also put on insulin.

The next year, 2017, therefore was a year of transformation.

I lost 22 kgs that year and didn’t need insulin. My rosacea was cured and cholesterol and triglyceride levels were down to normal again.

Today I weigh 68 kgs.

Question: What made you decide to set out on a journey to health? Was the big realisation due to a particular incident or cause?

Let’s face it, I was a mess. Imagine being prescribed insulin shots at 32. I realised in time that the panacea to all my problems was losing weight. I promised myself I had to fix myself! Thereon started my journey of transformation. Looking back, I think that the medical issues were a blessing in disguise!

Question: What was your typical day then?

My day then involved eating a whole load of non-sense. I didn’t understand concepts like good calories, bad calories, portion control etc. I loved junk food and would have pizza 2-3 times a week and a milkshake or cola whenever I wanted.  Basically, I lacked self-control; lacked the will to say no to myself.

Question: What does your typical day look like now?

Today, after knocking off 23-24 kgs, I feel like I understand food. I know what’s good for me; I know what’s not. Everything that goes into my mouth is well thought out. We are, after all, what we eat. I also take my workouts very seriously now. So today, workouts and proper diet are a big part of my life!

In a candid discussion with Neeha, I ask her everything anyone who has set a resolution to lose weight this year would want to know. You’re in for a rollercoaster ride.

Question: You’re a successful lawyer. How do you manage staying fit with all the stress, travel, and other things?

I follow a code that I’d love to share with everyone. It’s called C-P-P: Commitment, Priority and Planning.

Commitment: Fitness and wellbeing is a commitment to myself.

Priority: I approach each day as it comes; for instance, if work is pressing a particular day, then I roll back on my workout.

But my dietary habits remain unchanged more or less! The only time I indulge myself is during vacations! Last, planning: I plan for the next day an evening before, which includes my meals. I’d like to give a special mention here to my mother for being my support system! She’s my backbone without whom none of this would be possible.

Question: What is your message to a number of women who are juggling an active career and a family and are struggling to find time for their health?

If you’ve got to raise a healthy family (this includes physical and mental health), want to be an ace at work, then you have to be healthy yourself and be happy with yourself. Your own well-being has to be your priority first, only then can you impart good health to your loved ones.  Oh…and follow the CPP code if nothing works; it’ll take you a long way. All the best!

Mental Wellbeing

Today, what we all need most is peace of mind, and mind you, it doesn’t come easy. To find tranquility, you must let go, and to learn to do that, you must embark on a journey for your own sake. We know that being healthy means so much more than just a healthy body. It means a healthy mind – a state of complete mental wellbeing. We welcome personal experiences, expert views, meditation techniques, and other holistic ways of achieving mindfulness.

Nutrition

The human body is perfectly designed by nature, and how we fuel it is important. In order to climb the Everest, backpack around the globe, get that promotion, break the world record for baking the largest apple pie, or anything else that you want to do in life – it is important that you and your body are on the same page. And surprisingly enough, of all aspects of health, nutrition is the most ignored or misinterpreted. No more fad diets, ‘magical detoxes’, or weight-loss powders. Nutrition is simple science...and lots of taste. Submissions within this category will include articles on health through foods, recipes, juices and smoothies, and natural and sustainable ways to achieve weight goals.

Fitness

We walk, run, swim, cycle, dance, workout – all to stay fit. Even though the end goals may be different for everyone, fitness, at the end of the day, means something that promises a healthy, fulfilling life. It means training your body to do better each day in whatever ways you want it to. Submit within this category if your article is to do with any form of physical fitness like yoga, running, muscle building, a success story, or any aspect of physical health.

Organic Beauty

Most of what you put on your skin is absorbed right into the bloodstream (Need proof? Think nicotine patches, or birth control patches). This is why a lot of the world is going back to their roots. Think organic. Think of all gifts of nature you could use, that could enrich your body, without all the chemicals and preservatives. Organic beauty is taking a stand for yourself – it is a lifestyle. If you have written about hair, skin, natural remedies, ayurveda, or alternate therapies, this is where you need to be.

Love

Love for a friend, family member, or lover – all such profound, complex emotions and connections. Oh love, love, love! It has the power to heal the soul, make a saint out of a criminal, and basically, just bring a smile to your face even on the most dismal of days. There are no rules, no laws, no policies, and absolutely no one manual when it comes to relationships. But oh, wouldn’t we all like a little help once in a while? Our broad categories include relationships, friendship, dating, sex, parenting, and other aspects of love.
