The Productivity Angle: How To Achieve More In Less Time, With Meditation Sumiran Annamaria Kashyap
05 Apr 2017Array min read

Are you constantly distracted, anxious, stressed, occupied, and yet not productive? 10 minutes of meditation, daily, can make a difference.

Most people roll their eyes at the idea of meditation for time management. However, try spending the 10 minutes you waste daydreaming (‘zoning out’), on meditative visualisation/affirmation, or ‘pulling the plug’ to reboot. It could be the decisive difference between being busy and being occupied.   Not everyone who’s busy is actually productive. We’ve all had those days when we’ve done things; but without being able to cross them off our to-do list. Mindful meditation can help your grey cells refresh and ‘regroup’, because being too used to one way of working through your day can make you forget that there are better time-efficient attitudes to employ. Some are described below.

  • Purpose + being ‘in the moment’ = mindfulness – Human nature is such that the mind can't help wandering. One way to stop this from draining your energies is to prioritise thoughts, based on the purpose associated with them. Take out a few minutes daily to close your eyes; and ‘feel’ how important each thought dominating your mind is. Whether you feel stress/a sense of urgency, indifference/relief, will give you an idea of how low/high the corresponding task should be on your list. When you open your eyes, you'll be able to allocate your time and resources better.
  • Subconscious affirmative statements to yourself – When you feel overwhelmed by professional/personal commitments, replace your unnecessary coffee/cigarette break (which is possibly a defence mechanism against the surging panic attack) with this technique. Use that time to find a quiet, relatively noiseless corner. You can quietly whisper encouragement to yourself, but personally, I find whispering them mentally more impactful. This could be anything from “I will meet my deadline” to “I will not let politics/gossip distract me”.
  • Visualize the completion of your tasks – If you anticipate a busy day ahead, spend some time in bed (lying down/sitting cross-legged); and ‘see’ yourself completing the jobs on your list. Instead of simply thinking about how you'll perform them, imagine each step in detail. This is also a subconscious method, remarkably effective in influencing the conscious mind towards the desired direction. You can repeat this several times during the day.
  • Mindful recreation – If you're constantly ‘on your feet’, and eating meals or checking mails/messages means taking a break; then focussing on the finer details of these activities, in the time allotted for them, is also a form of meditation. Enjoy your lunch break, savour your meal. Be grateful for it. Reciprocate to people who could be as busy as you, but are taking time out to send you a text of love/concern. It doesn't take much to appreciate an email from the colleague who's giving you a heads-up they don't need to. If your efforts are half-baked, they will weigh on you; causing you to call them distractions when you're the one who made them distracting in the first place.   So meditation for time management isn't that difficult to get used to, is it? Ironically, this method, that has stood the test of time, could well be the power nap of our digital age!

True Fantasy: 5 Life-Changing Lessons From Romance Novels Sumiran Annamaria Kashyap
03 Apr 2017Array min read

This is for everyone who said that romance novels are full of crap. You were wrong.

Romance novels are such mood-lifters. They have a way of portraying real life complexities, embellished with some ‘fairy dust’. The dramatic language is familiar to us more than we know; because we speak to ourselves in the same fashion. Not all romance novels revolve around unrealistic storylines; some actually reinforce what we believe, but don't have the confidence to act upon.

  1. Have the courage to bare your vulnerabilities – This can be demeaning, because the wrong man/woman can use your vulnerabilities against you, causing potentially irreversible damage. My favourite line from Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd is: “Bathsheba loved Troy in the way that only self-reliant women love when they abandon their self-reliance.” Troy paid Bathsheba back by completely destroying her life. But, she got up each time she fell, carrying herself with her signature tenacity and dignity. The right man (Gabriel Oak) saw purity where most saw pride, and typical happy endings are so much happier when the path that led one there is human.
  2. Don’t make decisions to spite people – This is what Heathcliff did, when he married Isabella Linton, sister-in-law to the love of his life, Catherine Earnshaw (Wuthering Heights). When you're spiteful, you hurt the one(s) you truly care for; and invite the resentment of the one(s) you drag into the equation, to execute your spite – by neglecting them. Naturally, you also hurt yourself, because your festering regret causes everyone around you to distance themselves from you.
  3. Trust your feistiness – Feistiness is a reflection of sharp intellect, keen observation, and a sense of humour. It’s an acquired taste, so be prepared to not be everyone’s cup of tea. People will feel threatened and intimidated, and your no-nonsense behaviour will make them fidget. Their defence mechanism will be to break you down, by magnifying what they imagine to be your insecurities. Lady Catherine tells Elizabeth Bennett how unsuitable she is for Darcy, in Pride and Prejudice; playing the lineage and social status card. Lizzie gives it right back, telling Lady Catherine why and how she plans to do exactly as she pleases, and her politeness can be faulted nowhere. She also answers the Lady without really answering her, keeping her poise and grace; whilst the apparently better-bred Lady makes her fury and insecurity obvious with every question she asks.
  4. Patience makes you non-judgemental, and vice-versa – In The Time Traveler’s Wife, Clare says, “It’s hard being left behind. I wait for Henry, not knowing where he is, wondering if he’s okay. It’s hard to be the one who stays.” We may not have partners with genetic disorders that cause them to time-travel, but maybe they have jobs that take them away for us for long periods of time. Depending on where they are, we may not be able to stay in touch with them, so we don’t know what they’re doing. The lesson here is to trust the person and the process. It may seem like an endorsement of naïveté. In reality, there’s wisdom in not jumping to conclusions, causing and spreading anxiety/pain/negativity.
  5. If someone/something means the world to you, don't rush – Captain Antonio and Pelagia’s gradual love, surviving the chaos and danger of military occupation (Captain Corelli’s Mandolin), shows us that the sensitive, fragile nature of something valuable is best preserved by measured and persevering efforts. You don't pursue something that won't be worth the time/effort/resources spent; but it's equally necessary to not succumb to failures/disappointment/delays and the resulting disillusionment, when something that means a lot to you is taking time or effort to reach its fulfillment. Pelagia’s father says, “Love is what is left when the passion is gone.” Challenges may snuff out/diminish your passion, but the only thing that will keep you going is the realisation that true passion stems from respect and admiration for the cause you’re chasing. Worship the grandeur of your dream, the passion and strength will follow.

5 Wonderful Alcohol Uses, Apart From Drinking Lakshmi Devan
27 Dec 2017Array min read

“We are alcoholists, and we’re fighting for its rights. Our motto is – ‘Drink less, use more’.”

Do you have alcohol left over from a party, and are you too hungover to drink it? Then I have some good news for you. Don’t throw away that extra alcohol, because it can be surprisingly handy. All you need to do is put your mind to it. Hey, don’t stereotype alcohol! It is so much more than a drink. We are alcoholists, and we’re fighting for its rights. Our motto is – ‘Drink less, use more’. Here we go:

Vodka for windows and more

A mixture of vodka and water acts as a fantastic multi-purpose spray for cleaning windows. Vodka can also be mixed with vinegar, water, and your favourite essential oil to keep odours away from fabrics you cannot wash, like your couch. It can remove that thrift-store smell from your clothes, and also remove sticky labels from jars and bottles. Gunk on your glasses? Again, vodka has it taken care of. Just a dab on the cleaning cloth, and you’re done!

Clean jewellery with gin

Gin is great for your engagement ring! Just take a little gin in a bowl, and soak your gem in it for about 5 minutes. Now clean the stone and the setting with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and rinse it clean with cold water. Mind you, this works for jewellery that has gemstones like ruby, diamond, and sapphire that are set in metals like gold, white gold, rose gold, and platinum only.

Get rid of red wine stains with white wine

This one is an interesting trick – soak the red wine stained portion in a little white wine, and then apply a baking powder paste. Let it soak for about 3 hours. Now wash the fabric as normal, using a good detergent. Please note that this should only be tried with fabrics like cotton or polyester; in case of delicate and expensive fabrics like silk, it is advised that you get a professional cleaning done.

Say bye to dandruff with vodka

Crush 2-3 leaves of rosemary, and mix it with ½ a cup of vodka. Let the mixture rest for 2 days, then wash your hair with it.

Whisky for that onion malodour

This little trick works especially in cases of onion odours. Try rubbing a little whisky on that cutting board, to get rid of the stink.

Mental Wellbeing

Today, what we all need most is peace of mind, and mind you, it doesn’t come easy. To find tranquility, you must let go, and to learn to do that, you must embark on a journey for your own sake. We know that being healthy means so much more than just a healthy body. It means a healthy mind – a state of complete mental wellbeing. We welcome personal experiences, expert views, meditation techniques, and other holistic ways of achieving mindfulness.

Nutrition

The human body is perfectly designed by nature, and how we fuel it is important. In order to climb the Everest, backpack around the globe, get that promotion, break the world record for baking the largest apple pie, or anything else that you want to do in life – it is important that you and your body are on the same page. And surprisingly enough, of all aspects of health, nutrition is the most ignored or misinterpreted. No more fad diets, ‘magical detoxes’, or weight-loss powders. Nutrition is simple science...and lots of taste. Submissions within this category will include articles on health through foods, recipes, juices and smoothies, and natural and sustainable ways to achieve weight goals.

Fitness

We walk, run, swim, cycle, dance, workout – all to stay fit. Even though the end goals may be different for everyone, fitness, at the end of the day, means something that promises a healthy, fulfilling life. It means training your body to do better each day in whatever ways you want it to. Submit within this category if your article is to do with any form of physical fitness like yoga, running, muscle building, a success story, or any aspect of physical health.

Organic Beauty

Most of what you put on your skin is absorbed right into the bloodstream (Need proof? Think nicotine patches, or birth control patches). This is why a lot of the world is going back to their roots. Think organic. Think of all gifts of nature you could use, that could enrich your body, without all the chemicals and preservatives. Organic beauty is taking a stand for yourself – it is a lifestyle. If you have written about hair, skin, natural remedies, ayurveda, or alternate therapies, this is where you need to be.

Love

Love for a friend, family member, or lover – all such profound, complex emotions and connections. Oh love, love, love! It has the power to heal the soul, make a saint out of a criminal, and basically, just bring a smile to your face even on the most dismal of days. There are no rules, no laws, no policies, and absolutely no one manual when it comes to relationships. But oh, wouldn’t we all like a little help once in a while? Our broad categories include relationships, friendship, dating, sex, parenting, and other aspects of love.
