Why pollute your body with other people’s negative energy?

Have you ever felt this horrible, suffocating feelings come over you when someone who is upset or angry walks into a room? The negative vibe that envelopes the room just knocks the wind out of me. I was one of those people who would soak up the emotions of a person, until I realised that that is plain unhealthy.

There were times when I would feel physically ill with the stress and negative energy around me. But then I decided that there was just no reason for me to take all this on. So here’s what I figured:

1. There’s just no pleasing everyone –

I had to tell myself that it’s okay if everyone doesn’t like me. I’ve always been such a ‘I want everyone to love me’ kind of person. So if someone was upset with me, I would always get worried, and would get sucked into their vortex of negativity. Rule number 1 – show yourself some love, and don’t let anyone drain you of your positive energy.

2. Get away from those negative vibes –

When I feel like the energy field around me is bad, I now get up and move out of its reach. Get out and get some fresh air, and feel positive energy embrace you again. I practice yoga, so alom vilom works very well for me. Breathe out the negative energy, and breathe in the goodness; this pranayama clears my head, and helps me get rid of negative feelings.

3. Learn to say ‘no’ –

If someone is upset or angry, you can’t fix them. You can sympathise, but don’t let them take over your life. Negative energy seeps in quietly, and is just so difficult to get rid of. So be careful about what you open yourself up to. It’s okay to say no when you’re not comfortable about a situation or a person.

yo4. Be responsible for yourself –

You are the master of your own destiny – I know it sounds like one of those Karate Kid movies, but it’s true. You are the only one who should decide how you feel. If you need to cry, do that. If you need to walk away from something or someone, it’s all right. When you take yourself into your own hands, you actually release the grip negative emotions and negative people have on you.

Armed with these doctrines, I have been making little changes in my life, and I can actually feel the gloom and stress slowly but steadily vanish. It’s like a veil has lifted. I do have the occasional run-ins with people and situations that get me down, but I now know how to work my way out of it, stay positive, and boost my inner strength.
