9 Ways To Avoid Stress

Everything weighing down on you is not yours to carry. Let the stress go.

A mammal in a jungle runs for his life, and stress for survival causes the sympathetic nervous system to step in, and to ensure that all energy and resources are focused on survival.  The energy and blood in the body are directed to the major muscles for the emergency at hand, and all the resources to processes that are not essential for survival, are cut off.

The problem, today, is that we get into similar levels of stress for situations which are not a matter of life and death. And the fact that you do not know how to shut this chronic stress off, keeps your body in the ‘fight-or-flight’ mode for longer than it is meant to cope up with. Eventually, stress gives way to ailments like heart attack, diabetes, blood pressure, stroke, fatty liver, ulcers, and much more. So, this seemingly insignificant stress can actually kill you – in the literal sense. That is why we refer to it as ‘killer stress’.

Ways to avoid killer stress:

  1. Exercise – When you keep those muscles and joints moving, more oxygen flows through them. It helps your brain produce endorphins, the body’s feel-good hormones, thereby making you feel refreshed, and geared up to meet your challenges.
  2. Meditate – Time taken out to experience, reflect, and appreciate your existence, makes you value yourself more. And sound has the power to heal; it is a therapy. So create a playlist of music that makes your senses relax and use it while you meditate, or even otherwise. If music is not your thing, read a book, paint, or choose whatever relaxes you.

3. Allow yourself to feel your emotions – When you are stressed, your body produces negative hormones. Being stressed for long periods of time means that you are floating in a pool of these hormones. Your emotions make you, and each of your emotions needs to be felt, acknowledged, and dealt with, in order to make space for anything else inside you.

4. Diet – When stressed, your body shuts down your immune system, which allows for the growth of bacteria, leading to various illnesses. So you need foods which will boost your immune system and help lower anxiety, such as green leafy vegetables and dark chocolate. Also, having too much or too little sugar and salt in your body can impact your mood.

5. Meet-ups and support groups – Talking about your problems with people who might be in similar situations, or helping others in their situations, and sometimes laughing aloud about things helps combat stress. It might help your body produce an enzyme called telomerase, that can repair the damage done to your chromosome tips by stress.

6. Work-life balance – Conditions that you live and work in are extremely important factors in the stress levels impacting your life. Limit your hours of work, and give your 100 per cent during that time. Post work, create a life for yourself that you love, and feel relaxed in.

7. Don’t let stress get the best of you – Often, stress prevents you from giving your best at your job, leading to higher stress levels. Indulge in activities that make you feel relaxed and refreshed, as it can help your brain focus on things that produce the feel-good hormones, and counter the stress hormones. This will leave you with a better frame of mind to tackle the problem at hand.

8. Self-worth – Do you have a habit of belittling yourself? When things don’t go your way, do you start questioning your worth? When things don’t pan out as you expected, remind yourself that life happens. Plan out your future course of action and work on your plan, as worrying without action only adds to the stress.

9. Keep faith in the power (within or above) – Having faith in a power that is stronger than the problem at hand helps your brain feel in control. Research has suggested that keeping faith has got addicts and alcoholics to stay strong post rehab, and has helped them stay out of giving in to temptation.

If the above doesn’t seem to help you much, or you find it almost impossible to live through the above changes in your lifestyle, think about getting an appointment with your doctor. Sometimes, stress takes a toll on us to the extent that self-repair is too slow, compared to the pace of the damage caused by stress. Do whatever it takes to get that stress under control, and get the joy back in your life.
